Planning Review Completed Ahead of Schedule, Onyang Plant to Break Ground in September

The South Chungcheong Provincial Government announced on August 19 that it has successfully completed the Urban Planning Committee review for Samsung Electronics' semiconductor manufacturing plant expansion project at the Onyang campus. Relevant authorities accelerated the preliminary consultations and administrative reviews, allowing the Urban Planning Committee review to be completed more than a month ahead of schedule.

Samsung Electronics plans to begin construction on the new plant next month, though the completion date has not yet been announced.

6 Trillion Won Investment Targets AI Memory

According to reports, the Samsung Group announced at the "National Briefing on the Vision for Advancing the Advanced Industries of the Chungcheong Region" held at the Asan plant earlier this month that it plans to invest approximately 140 trillion won in the Chungcheong region by 2040. At that time, Samsung announced investments in cutting-edge displays, HBM plants, next-generation batteries, and packaging substrates for AI servers.

This expansion project, with an investment of 6 trillion won, involves constructing a new plant on a 389,825-square-meter site within the Onyang campus to expand production of high-performance AI semiconductors such as HBM.

This investment is reportedly the first project to be launched among the three Mega Projects for South Korea Great Leap Forward, which aim to reshape the future industrial landscape with semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers as its three pillars.
