Rising Wafer Foundry Cost Drives Up CPU Prices, Intel/Qualcomm/AMD Hike Prices in Succession

By: M 2 days ago

AI, smartphones and high-performance computing products are competing for TSMC's 3nm capacity, while 2nm has entered mass-production ramp-up, pushing up per-wafer and design costs accordingly. Demand for AI PCs and servers, paired with rising advanced process costs, is pushing up CPU prices. Recently, supply chain sources have reported that Intel, Qualcomm and AMD have successively hiked CPU prices.

Intel has raised processor prices three times since the end of last year. Supply chain sources reveal that starting September 1, Intel rolled out differentiated price adjustments across product lines: high-end Panther Lake products registered the steepest increases at 15% to 20%; Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake rose roughly 5% to 10%; Alder Lake and Twin Lake climbed 10% to 20%. The price increases do not cover the entire Panther Lake lineup. This round of adjustment targets high-end GPU tile products built on TSMC's advanced processes, showing wafer foundry cost has been exerting a growing influence on final CPU pricing.

Pricing for Qualcomm's Snapdragon X/X2 Elite and other platforms will rise by roughly 10% starting October. Industry observers note that as Qualcomm expands from mobile SoCs into PCs, edge computing and other high-performance computing markets, its CPU, GPU and NPU specifications keep advancing. Its growing reliance on advanced processes and packaging further lifts its chip cost profile.

AMD, meanwhile, is reportedly preparing price adjustments for select CPUs, with potential 10% hikes for Ryzen and EPYC, though the actual magnitude of the increase, scope and effective date remain unconfirmed. Both Ryzen and EPYC depend heavily on TSMC's advanced processes, and next-generation EPYC is moving to the 2nm node. Higher cost for advanced processes, advanced packaging and wafers will all serve as key variables shaping its future pricing.
