Memory facturers Continue to Adopt Cautious Sales Strategies at Year-End, Maintaining Upward Price Trend for Finished Memory Products This Week

As December approaches, with ongoing personnel adjustments at original equipment manufacturers gradually being implemented, downstream storage manufacturers have largely achieved their annual performance targets, with some even exceeding expectations ahead of schedule. This quarter, resource controls at both the original equipment and spot market levels have led storage manufacturers to slow down their sales pace. It is anticipated that as companies enter their year-end inventory assessment phase this month, limited resource supplies will continue to drive strict sales controls. Some storage manufacturers may even halt quotations and orders or significantly raise prices due to cautious sales strategies.

Regarding finished products, after nearly a quarter of price increases, most products—including those in the industrial, channel, and embedded markets—have reached record-high prices. The channel market is particularly sensitive to price fluctuations, often experiencing rapid rises and falls. Amid resource shortages, some storage manufacturers have excessively inflated quotations, leading to situations where certain consumer-grade SSDs in the channel market are priced higher than their industrial counterparts. This has created inflated and unsustainable pricing bubbles.

In terms of upstream resources, Flash Wafer and DDR chip prices have remained stable recently.

Recently, channel manufacturers have strictly controlled shipment volumes, and SSD prices have surged rapidly. This has driven some channel customers to seek lower-tier resources as a temporary solution to alleviate cost and supply pressures. However, this has not significantly impacted the channel market, as channel SSD prices continue to rise this week. Certain channel manufacturers are reluctant to sell and have raised quotations sharply, leading to chaotic pricing in the channel market. Meanwhile, channel memory modules are experiencing sustained shortages, especially for DDR5, which is in more critical supply than anticipated. As a result, both DDR4 and DDR5 memory module prices in the channel market have risen this week.

From a resource perspective, driven by ongoing supply controls from original equipment manufacturers, spot market Flash Wafer prices have surged significantly. Since September, prices for 512Gb/1Tb Wafers have nearly doubled or tripled. Although industrial manufacturers have adjusted SSD prices in response to rising resource costs, current industrial SSD prices have doubled since September and reached historic highs. However, the price increases for finished products have not kept pace with resource price hikes, with some SSD capacities even experiencing inverted pricing compared to resources. Currently, industrial manufacturers are focusing on selling lower-capacity SSDs, such as 256GB models, while higher-capacity SSDs are performing moderately. In the coming period, industrial manufacturers will largely adhere to a "high-price, limited-quantity" sales strategy. Similarly, industrial memory modules are also adjusting prices upward while controlling order volumes.

This quarter, aside from a few original equipment manufacturers offering limited supplies to storage manufacturers under new agreements, most NAND resources remain tight, especially those competing with server market demand. As storage manufacturers finalize pricing and shipments for priority customers in Q4 and ensure smooth product deliveries, larger customers are consuming more of the existing inventory. Meanwhile, the rapid increase in spot resource prices, coupled with uncertainties in upstream supply, has heightened concerns among storage manufacturers about future cost pressures. This has made them more cautious in sales and more determined to raise prices. In terms of current market acceptance, terminals such as robotics and educational tablets, which command higher prices, are more receptive to costly embedded storage products. Additionally, LPDDR4X supplies are extremely limited this quarter, with some resources nearly halted, leading to significant shortages for certain capacities. Storage manufacturers are hopeful that supplies from some original equipment manufacturers will stabilize after the overseas Thanksgiving holiday. This week, prices for embedded eMMC, UFS, and some LPDDR4X products have increased.
